Can Urgent Care Treat a Sprained Ankle? What to Expect

TrufaMED digital X-ray imaging equipment for walk-in diagnostics

Yes, urgent care can fully treat a sprained ankle. TrufaMED provides on-site X-ray to rule out fractures, physician evaluation to grade the sprain severity, and treatment including splinting, crutches if needed, and pain management. You will be in and out in under an hour versus 3-4 hours at the ER.

Yes, Urgent Care Can Absolutely Treat a Sprained Ankle

This is one of the most common questions we get at TrufaMED Urgent Care, and the answer is yes. We have everything needed to evaluate and treat ankle injuries including on-site digital X-ray for immediate imaging, professional splinting and bracing, prescription pain management, and referral coordination if orthopedic follow-up is needed.

What Happens During Your Visit

Your provider examines your ankle, checking for swelling, bruising, range of motion, and stability. They assess whether X-rays are needed using established clinical guidelines — not every ankle injury requires imaging, but when it does, our on-site digital X-ray provides immediate results.

If the X-ray shows a fracture, we apply a splint to stabilize the bone and refer you to an orthopedic specialist. If it confirms a sprain, we determine the grade (I, II, or III) and create a treatment plan based on severity.

Understanding Sprain Grades

Grade I sprains involve minor stretching of the ligament with slight swelling. You can usually bear weight. Recovery takes 1-3 weeks. Grade II sprains involve a partial ligament tear with moderate swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight. Recovery takes 3-6 weeks. Grade III sprains are complete ligament tears with severe swelling, instability, and inability to bear weight. These often require orthopedic referral and may take 2-3 months to heal.

Why Skip the ER

The average ER wait for a non-critical ankle injury is 2-4 hours, and the bill can exceed $2,000. At TrufaMED, you receive the same X-ray and evaluation in about an hour at a significantly lower cost. Save the ER for life-threatening emergencies.

Recovery Tips

Follow the RICE protocol — rest, ice, compression, elevation. Take prescribed anti-inflammatories as directed. Do not rush back to activity too soon, as re-injury is common with sprains. Follow up as recommended by your provider.
