The Quick Answer

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at TrufaMED?

HBOT is a physician-supervised medical treatment in which you breathe 100% pure oxygen inside a pressurized, hard-sided clinical chamber. Elevated pressure dissolves oxygen directly into your blood plasma, reaching tissues that red blood cells alone cannot. At TrufaMED, every session is overseen in-person by a UHMS-licensed physician, and every patient is fully cleared through a mandatory physical exam and on-site chest X-ray before their first treatment.

Expected Outcomes

What Changes Across a Protocol.

Published research and clinical observation show measurable shifts across four outcome categories during a typical HBOT protocol. Individual results vary — your physician establishes baseline markers and tracks your response at each session.

Wound Healing
Before
Compromised tissue
After
Revascularized, closing
Angiogenesis stimulated; new capillary networks form in hypoxic tissue. Chronic wound closure accelerated 30–60% in published trials.
Inflammation Markers
CRP · BaselineHigh
CRP · After 10 SessionsReduced
TNF-α, IL-6, and CRP markers measurably decline across a protocol. Oxidative stress drops; antioxidant enzyme activity rises.
Energy & Recovery
S.1S.10
Energy and exercise tolerance rise progressively across sessions. Post-viral fatigue and Long COVID patients report measurable quality-of-life gains.
Cognition & Focus
Baseline
Brain fog, slower recall
Post-Protocol

Sharper focus, clearer recall
Cerebral blood flow imaging shows improvement. Patients report sharper executive function, faster reaction time, and better sleep quality.

These visualizations represent typical directional changes documented in peer-reviewed HBOT research. Individual responses vary. TrufaMED does not claim specific outcomes; your physician will discuss realistic expectations for your case during your initial evaluation.

Your HBOT Protocol

What a 10-Session Protocol Looks Like.

Most patients at TrufaMED begin with the Wellness Package — intake evaluation plus 10 sessions — and extend from there based on goals and response. Here is a typical progression.

Sessions 1–3
Baseline & Adjustment
Body adapts to pressurized oxygen delivery. Mild fatigue or relaxation after sessions is common. Baseline markers established.
Sessions 4–6
Early Response
Initial improvements in energy, sleep quality, and inflammation often reported. Some patients notice sharper cognition.
Sessions 7–10
Cellular Consolidation
Measurable changes in wound healing, tissue repair, and performance markers. Physician reviews response and reassesses protocol.
10+
Extended Protocol
Chronic conditions, long COVID, cognitive optimization, and anti-aging typically benefit from 20–40 sessions. Your physician designs the extension.

Responses vary by individual. Your physician designs and adjusts your protocol based on your clinical picture and treatment goals.

Before Your First Visit

What to Expect & Bring.

Your first visit at TrufaMED is your Initial Experience — a comprehensive physical exam, on-site chest X-ray, and your first HBOT session. Here is exactly what to plan for.

Your Pre-Visit Checklist
  • Wear loose cotton clothing. Avoid jewelry, metal accessories, and zippers.
  • Bring a valid ID and a list of any current medications.
  • Leave electronics and flammable items outside the chamber. Safety requirement.
  • Eat a light meal an hour or two before your session. Hydrate.
  • Plan about 2 hours total for the Initial Experience (exam + X-ray + first session).
  • Disclose any congestion — active sinus issues may reschedule your session.
  • Arrive rested. Many patients nap or relax during the 60–90 minute session.
What Is HBOT

Pure oxygen. At a cellular level.

HBOT is a refined, non-invasive experience that envelops your body in 100% pure concentrated oxygen. By relaxing within a private, pressurized environment, your system absorbs oxygen at a cellular level — far beyond what normal breathing allows. Patients seeking hyperbaric oxygen therapy in Miami choose our Surfside location for physician-led care in a private, medically supervised environment.

Care at TrufaMED is delivered by physicians certified through the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS), following UHMS-aligned protocols and clinical oversight standards for patient safety and treatment integrity. Our facility holds Joint Commission accreditation — the gold standard in healthcare quality.

TrufaMED operates a hard-sided clinical hyperbaric chamber at medically validated pressures of 1.5–2.5 ATA — unlike soft portable chambers used at wellness spas. This is the same standard used in peer-reviewed published clinical research and endorsed by the UHMS Indications Committee. Looking for HBOT near me? TrufaMED is minutes from Miami Beach, Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor Islands, Sunny Isles Beach, and Aventura.

Most importantly: a UHMS-licensed physician is physically present — in the room, not on-call — for every single session. That is the UHMS standard. It is the standard found in hospital hyperbaric units. It is the only way HBOT should be delivered.

Why Breathing Alone Isn’t Enough

Under hyperbaric pressure, oxygen dissolves directly into the blood plasma, lymphatic fluid, and cerebrospinal fluid — reaching tissues that red blood cells cannot.

  • ·10–15× normal oxygen saturation levels
  • ·reaches hypoxic tissues with compromised flow
  • ·stimulates new blood vessel formation (angiogenesis)
  • ·activates stem cell release from bone marrow
  • ·reduces systemic inflammation markers
The TrufaMED Difference

Clinical-Grade HBOT. Delivered the Right Way.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has exploded in popularity — and with it, a wave of wellness spas and medspas offering sessions with no medical clearance, no physician present, and soft portable chambers that cannot reach therapeutic pressure. TrufaMED does not operate that way.

Our HBOT is delivered in a hard-sided clinical chamber at medically validated pressures of 1.5 to 2.5 ATA, with 100% pure oxygen. Sessions run 60 to 90 minutes. Every patient is screened before their first session with a full physical exam, medical history review, and an on-site chest X-ray to rule out contraindications like pneumothorax or bullae.

Why This Matters

HBOT Is Being Taken Too Lightly. We Refuse To.

Hyperbaric chambers are now found in spas, gyms, and wellness centers across Miami — most operating without physician oversight, medical clearance, or the safety protocols the UHMS and FDA require. At TrufaMED, HBOT is a medical procedure, not a spa treatment. Here is how we run it.

Full Physical Exam
Every new patient is evaluated in-person by a board-certified physician before any chamber use. We review medical history, current medications, and lung and ear status to confirm HBOT is safe for you.
On-Site Chest X-Ray
Mandatory chest imaging performed on-site rules out pneumothorax, bullae, and other contraindications that make pressurized oxygen dangerous. This single step is skipped at nearly every spa HBOT operation.
UHMS-Licensed MD In-Person
A UHMS-licensed physician is physically present overseeing every patient in the chamber — not watching remotely, not on-call. This is the UHMS standard and the only way to run HBOT safely.
Continuous Monitoring
Vitals, chamber pressure, oxygen concentration, and patient comfort are monitored throughout every session. If anything changes, a physician is already in the room to respond.
UHMS Protocol Alignment
Session length, pressure targets, and treatment plans follow published Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society guidelines. The same protocols used by peer-reviewed clinical research.
Joint Commission Accredited
Our facility is Joint Commission accredited — the same accreditation used by major hospital systems. It is the gold standard in healthcare quality and an exceptionally rare distinction in outpatient HBOT.

The Science of Healing

What Happens Inside Your Body at 2.0 ATA.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not a wellness trend. It is a precisely calibrated physiological intervention. Understanding the mechanism helps you appreciate why protocol design, pressure settings, and physician oversight are not optional — they are what separate clinical outcomes from placebo.

Step 1 — Hyperoxygenation
10–20× Normal Plasma Oxygen

At 2.0 ATA, blood plasma oxygen saturation rises to 10–20 times its resting level. Tissue oxygen partial pressure climbs to 1,000+ mmHg — levels only achievable under hyperbaric conditions. This saturates tissues that red blood cells cannot reach in an inflamed or hypoxic state.

Step 2 — Neovascularization
New Capillary Networks Form

Repeated sessions trigger angiogenesis — the growth of new blood vessels into oxygen-deprived tissue. Published data from UHMS-aligned trials demonstrate measurable capillary density increases in chronic wound and post-surgical patients after 20–40 session protocols.

Step 3 — Stem Cell Mobilization
800% Increase in Circulating Stem Cells

A landmark study published in the American Journal of Physiology found that a 20-session HBOT protocol produced an 800% increase in circulating stem cells and progenitor cells compared to baseline — the same cells responsible for tissue repair and immune reconstitution.

Step 4 — Fibroblast Activation
Collagen Synthesis Accelerates

Elevated tissue oxygen activates fibroblasts — the cells responsible for producing collagen and extracellular matrix. This accelerates wound closure, scar remodeling, and post-surgical tissue integration. The effect is particularly pronounced in patients recovering from plastic and reconstructive procedures.

Patient Case Patterns

Who Benefits Most from a Full HBOT Protocol.

HBOT delivers measurable results across a wide spectrum of patients. The cases below represent the clinical patterns our physicians see most frequently — each with a distinct protocol rationale.

Post-Surgical Recovery

Elective Surgery — 10-Session Pre/Post Protocol

Patients undergoing elective cosmetic, orthopedic, or reconstructive surgery represent one of the clearest HBOT use cases. The standard protocol involves approximately five sessions in the two weeks prior to surgery to build oxygen reserves, followed by five sessions in the two weeks immediately post-surgery to accelerate tissue healing and reduce bruising and swelling.

The mechanism is direct: elevated plasma oxygen reduces post-operative edema by counteracting the hypoxic cascade in traumatized tissue. Fibroblast activation accelerates collagen deposition at the wound margins, and leukocyte oxidative burst capacity is enhanced — meaning your immune system’s ability to prevent post-surgical infection is measurably higher during the critical healing window.

Our private, concierge-quality setting is particularly valued by surgical patients who prefer a discrete clinical environment. Sessions are conducted without shared waiting rooms, and scheduling is coordinated around your surgical calendar. Learn more about our recovery protocols.

Chronic Wound Care

20–40 Session Course with Physician Monitoring

Chronic non-healing wounds — including diabetic foot ulcers, radiation injury, and osteomyelitis — represent some of the most evidence-supported HBOT indications recognized by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS). The standard course for these conditions involves 20–40 sessions at 2.4 ATA, with physician-monitored progression assessments between sessions.

The core problem in chronic wounds is tissue hypoxia: the wound environment is too oxygen-depleted for the normal healing cascade to proceed. HBOT temporarily reverses this at the cellular level — plasma-dissolved oxygen diffuses directly into hypoxic tissue without relying on red blood cell transport, breaking the stasis cycle that keeps wounds open.

Published clinical trials show chronic wound closure acceleration of 30–60% in patients who complete full HBOT protocols versus standard wound care alone. Every chronic wound patient at TrufaMED receives a tailored protocol with interim clinical assessments. Read more in our HBOT Benefits Explained guide.

Concussion & TBI Recovery

Emerging Evidence — NIH-Registered Trial Support

HBOT for post-concussion syndrome and mild traumatic brain injury is an active area of clinical investigation. Multiple NIH-registered trials — including research from Tel Aviv University and Department of Defense-funded programs — have demonstrated improvements in cognitive function, symptom severity scores, and brain perfusion imaging following 40–60 session HBOT protocols in TBI patients.

The proposed mechanism involves restoring oxygen delivery to penumbral tissue — brain regions that are structurally intact but metabolically dormant after injury. Neuroplasticity markers and SPECT imaging in trial cohorts have shown measurable changes after protocol completion.

This indication is off-label in the United States. Your physician will review the current evidence base with you during the initial evaluation and determine candidacy based on your specific clinical picture. Physician oversight is not just important here — it is essential.

Athletic Performance

Recovery Stack for Competitive & Amateur Athletes

Elite and amateur athletes are among the most motivated HBOT patients because the benefit is directly measurable in training metrics. Reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), faster clearance of lactic acid, and accelerated soft tissue repair between training blocks are the primary clinical goals. A typical sports performance protocol runs 10 sessions over a 4–5 week cycle, often timed around competition or high-volume training phases.

Combined with IV therapy — particularly our Myers Cocktail or Superstar drip — the recovery synergy is amplified. IV therapy replenishes the micronutrients and electrolytes depleted during intense training; HBOT addresses the underlying tissue hypoxia and inflammation that limits training capacity. Many of our athletes stack both modalities on recovery days.

For the full athletic recovery protocol breakdown, visit our dedicated page: HBOT Recovery for Athletes in Miami.

Cosmetic Recovery

Post-Op Aesthetic Procedures — Private, Discrete Setting

Patients recovering from rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, liposuction, facelifts, and similar procedures have embraced HBOT as a recovery accelerator that reduces visible bruising and swelling in the critical first two weeks post-procedure. The science is the same as post-surgical recovery generally — fibroblast activation, collagen synthesis, and reduced inflammatory edema — but the aesthetic timeline motivation is particularly acute.

At TrufaMED, cosmetic recovery patients appreciate our private single-patient session environment. There are no shared waiting rooms, no public-facing lobby during your session, and scheduling is fully coordinated around your surgical recovery timeline. Concierge medicine members receive priority scheduling within 24 hours of discharge from their surgical facility.

Combine with our Red Light Therapy add-on — included with IV therapy memberships — for an integrated tissue repair stack addressing both cellular oxygenation and photobiomodulation.

Medical Honesty

Who Is NOT a Candidate.

HBOT is safe for the vast majority of adults, but not everyone. Part of being UHMS-aligned is being honest about contraindications. Every patient is screened through a full physical exam and on-site chest X-ray before the first session — not after a deposit is charged.

If any of these apply to you, please disclose during your initial consultation. In some cases HBOT can still proceed with additional medical clearance or condition management. In others, we will decline to start therapy until the underlying issue is addressed or, if needed, permanently.

Absolute & Relative Contraindications
  • ×
Untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung). HBOT is strictly contraindicated; pressurization can be life-threatening.
  • ×
Certain chemotherapy drugs (bleomycin, cisplatin, doxorubicin, disulfiram) active in your system. Your physician will review your current medications.
  • ×
Active untreated lung disease (bullae, COPD exacerbation, emphysematous blebs). Stable chronic conditions are often cleared; active disease is not.
  • ×
Active upper-respiratory infection, sinusitis, or ear infection. Pressurization with blocked sinuses/eustachian tubes can cause barotrauma. Reschedule until clear.
  • ×
Uncontrolled high fever at the time of session. Lower your fever first, then reschedule.
  • ×
Pregnancy — HBOT during pregnancy is approached with caution and only in medically-necessary cases (e.g., carbon monoxide poisoning). Not used for elective/wellness protocols.
  • ×
Severe claustrophobia that cannot be managed with coaching or anxiolytic premedication. Most claustrophobia can be addressed — we discuss options in advance.
  • ×
Pacemaker or implanted medical device not pressure-rated. Most modern devices are compatible; your physician confirms with the manufacturer spec sheet.
Bottom line: If we cannot safely deliver HBOT, we will tell you during your initial evaluation — before your first session charge. No deposit is kept if you are disqualified on medical grounds.

Frequently Asked

What Patients Ask First.

How much does hyperbaric oxygen therapy cost in Miami?
HBOT pricing at TrufaMED is transparent and all-inclusive. Your first visit is $300 and includes a full physical exam with on-site chest X-ray plus your first session. Continuing care sessions are $150 each. Our best-value Wellness Package — initial evaluation plus 10 sessions — is $1,000 (valued at $1,650 individually). No hidden fees, no insurance pre-auth required.
How long does a session take, and how many sessions will I need?
Sessions typically last 60 to 90 minutes. The number of sessions recommended depends on your specific health goals and condition. Some patients see benefits after a few visits, while those addressing chronic conditions may benefit from a longer protocol (typically 20–40 sessions) determined by your physician.
What does a typical HBOT session feel like?
Most patients describe the experience as deeply relaxing. You lie comfortably in a private pressurized chamber and breathe 100% pure oxygen. As pressure increases, you may feel a mild fullness in your ears — similar to taking off in an airplane. Many patients read, nap, or simply rest during the 60–90 minute session.
Can I bring my phone into the HBOT chamber?
No. For safety, all electronics, jewelry, and flammable items must remain outside the chamber. The oxygen-enriched environment requires strict safety protocols. Use this time to disconnect and focus on recovery.
How should I dress for my appointment?
Wear loose-fitting, comfortable cotton clothing. Avoid accessories, jewelry, undergarments with metal, or clothing with sharp zippers to ensure safety and comfort within the chamber.
Is HBOT safe for seniors?
Yes. HBOT is well-tolerated by most patients including older adults. All patients receive a comprehensive physical exam and medical clearance before beginning therapy. Our UHMS-certified physicians monitor every session to ensure safety and comfort at every age.
How does HBOT help with post-surgery recovery?
HBOT is frequently used to aid recovery after cosmetic or medical surgeries. Increased oxygen levels accelerate the body’s natural healing processes, significantly reducing swelling, bruising, and inflammation, which can shorten overall recovery time.
Are there any contraindications for HBOT?
While HBOT is safe for the vast majority of people, certain conditions — such as an untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung), specific lung diseases, or active sinus congestion — may prevent therapy. A mandatory physical exam including an on-site chest X-ray is required before your first session. Your physician will review your medical history to ensure you are fully cleared.
What is the difference between a soft chamber and a hard chamber?
TrufaMED uses a hard-sided clinical hyperbaric chamber — the gold standard in medical-grade HBOT. Hard chambers operate at higher pressures (typically 1.5–2.5 ATA) and deliver 100% pure oxygen under physician supervision, in alignment with UHMS clinical protocols. Soft portable chambers found at spas operate at lower pressures with ambient air, providing a significantly reduced therapeutic effect and lacking the physician oversight required for safe medical treatment.
How much does HBOT cost in Miami?
At TrufaMED, HBOT sessions start at $150 per session for single appointments, with discounted packages available for 10-, 20-, and 40-session protocols. Insurance may cover HBOT for 14 FDA-approved indications (diabetic foot ulcers, chronic non-healing wounds, radiation injury, osteomyelitis, etc.). Wellness/off-label HBOT is typically self-pay. Call (305) 537-6396 for package pricing and insurance verification.
Is HBOT covered by Medicare and insurance?
Medicare and most commercial insurance cover HBOT for the 14 FDA-approved indications — including diabetic foot wounds, chronic non-healing wounds, radiation tissue injury, osteomyelitis refractory to antibiotics, air embolism, carbon monoxide poisoning, and decompression sickness. Off-label uses (anti-aging, athletic recovery, post-surgery recovery, concussion) are typically not covered. TrufaMED can verify your insurance and help submit claims.
How long is a single HBOT session?
A single HBOT treatment at TrufaMED is 60 to 90 minutes at 2.0–2.4 ATA (atmospheres absolute) pressure. Add 10–15 minutes for compression, 10–15 minutes for decompression, and 5–10 minutes for post-session check. Total appointment time is usually 90–120 minutes. You can read, watch movies, or sleep during the session.
What conditions can HBOT help with?
FDA-approved: diabetic foot ulcers, chronic non-healing wounds, radiation tissue injury, osteomyelitis, gas gangrene, air or gas embolism, carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness, severe anemia from blood loss, skin graft failures, crush injuries, compromised flaps, burns, and intracranial abscess. Off-label/wellness: athletic recovery, anti-aging, post-surgical recovery, concussion/TBI recovery, Lyme disease adjunct, autism spectrum adjunct therapy. Always discuss with your physician.
Is HBOT safe? What are the risks?
HBOT at clinical-grade chambers (2.0–2.4 ATA, 100% oxygen) is very safe when supervised by a trained physician. Most common side effect is ear barotrauma (like airplane ear) in 2–5% of patients — preventable with proper equalization technique. Rare risks: oxygen toxicity (almost never at standard protocols), temporary myopia (reversible), claustrophobia. TrufaMED’s chamber is a full clinical-grade hard-sided chamber, not a soft-sided “wellness” chamber.
What is the difference between hard-sided and soft-sided HBOT?
Hard-sided (clinical) chambers operate at 2.0–2.4 ATA with 100% oxygen — the pressure and oxygen concentration required for clinical benefit in FDA-approved indications. Soft-sided chambers (sometimes sold as “mild” HBOT) operate at 1.3 ATA with ambient air — not strong enough for most clinical benefits and not FDA-approved for medical indications. TrufaMED uses a hard-sided clinical chamber.
How many HBOT sessions do I need?
Protocol depends on the indication. Diabetic wound healing: 20–40 sessions typical. Radiation injury: 30–60 sessions. Post-surgical recovery: 10–20 sessions. Athletic recovery or wellness: 5–10 sessions. Concussion recovery protocols: 40–80 sessions. Your TrufaMED physician will build a personalized protocol after reviewing your history and goals.
Can I combine HBOT with IV therapy or red light therapy?
Yes — many TrufaMED patients combine HBOT with IV therapy (often NAD+ or Myers’ Cocktail for wellness protocols) and red light therapy. Red light therapy is offered as a complimentary add-on with every in-clinic IV session. Combining HBOT + IV is especially common for athletic recovery, post-surgical recovery, and anti-aging protocols. See /hbot-red-light-therapy/ for details.
Do I need a doctor’s referral for HBOT?
For FDA-approved indications billed through insurance, yes — a physician order with documented medical necessity is required. For self-pay wellness HBOT, no referral is needed — TrufaMED’s own physicians will evaluate you and prescribe the protocol. Either way, every patient is screened for contraindications (certain lung conditions, recent ear surgery, uncontrolled seizure disorders) before their first session.
Is TrufaMED’s HBOT chamber safe for claustrophobic patients?
Our clinical-grade chamber has a clear acrylic window for full visibility out, two-way communication with the technician, and entertainment options (movies, music). Most claustrophobic patients adapt within the first 1–2 sessions. For severe claustrophobia, we can administer mild anxiolytics pre-session under physician supervision. If you are concerned, book a 15-minute in-person consultation before scheduling — you can see the chamber in person.
