HBOT for Wound Healing: What the Research Shows

TrufaMED procedure suite for urgent care treatments in Surfside

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Promotes Wound Healing

Chronic wounds affect millions of Americans each year, and many fail to respond to conventional treatment. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has emerged as one of the most clinically validated adjunctive treatments for wounds that resist standard care. At TrufaMED in Surfside, FL, our UHMS-certified physicians use a hard-shell monoplace chamber to deliver clinical-grade HBOT for wound-healing patients from across the Miami area.

HBOT works by placing patients in a pressurized chamber where they breathe 100% oxygen at pressures between 1.5 and 2.0 atmospheres absolute (ATA). This dramatically increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in blood plasma, delivering oxygen to tissues at levels 10 to 15 times higher than normal breathing. For wound-healing patients, this oxygen surge triggers several critical biological processes.

The Science Behind HBOT and Tissue Repair

Peer-reviewed studies published in medical journals including Diabetes Care and the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society journal have demonstrated that HBOT promotes wound healing through multiple mechanisms. The therapy stimulates angiogenesis, which is the formation of new blood vessels in damaged tissue. It also enhances collagen synthesis, the structural protein essential for wound closure, and increases the mobilization of stem cells from bone marrow to the injury site.

One of the most significant effects of HBOT on wound healing is its ability to fight infection. The elevated oxygen environment enhances the bactericidal activity of white blood cells, helping the immune system clear infections that may be stalling the healing process. This is particularly important for patients with diabetic foot ulcers, where infection is a leading cause of treatment failure and amputation.

FDA-Cleared Indications for Wound Healing

The FDA has cleared HBOT for several wound-related conditions, reflecting the strength of clinical evidence. These include diabetic wounds of the lower extremities that have not responded to 30 days of standard wound care, delayed radiation injury affecting soft tissue and bone, compromised skin grafts and flaps, crush injuries, and chronic refractory osteomyelitis. Each of these conditions involves impaired oxygen delivery to tissues, which HBOT directly addresses.

What to Expect During Treatment at TrufaMED

Wound-healing protocols at TrufaMED typically involve 30 to 40 sessions of 90 minutes each, with most patients scheduled for five sessions per week during the initial treatment phase. Our physician evaluates wound progress at regular intervals using standardized measurement tools and clinical photography. Treatment plans are adjusted based on measurable healing outcomes rather than arbitrary session counts.

Each session is comfortable and non-invasive. You lie in our monoplace chamber while the pressure gradually increases over 10 to 15 minutes. During treatment, you can listen to music, watch content, or simply rest. Our clinical team monitors you throughout via intercom and visual observation. Most patients describe the experience as relaxing, with the only notable sensation being mild ear pressure similar to airplane descent.

Is HBOT Right for Your Wound?

If you have a chronic wound that has not healed after 30 days of standard care, HBOT may be a clinically appropriate next step. TrufaMED offers physician consultations to evaluate whether your wound type and medical history make you a candidate for hyperbaric treatment. Our self-pay pricing starts at $150 per session, with package pricing available for multi-session wound care protocols.

TrufaMED is located at 9445 Harding Ave, Surfside, FL 33154. We are open 7 days a week and accept walk-ins. To learn more about HBOT for wound healing, visit our HBOT page or call (305) 537-6396.
