The 2026-2027 seasonal influenza vaccine is shipping to providers now. Patients often ask: is it too early to get the flu shot in Miami? The short answer: get it by the end of October. The longer answer is in this post.
Why Miami Flu Season Is Different
Most US flu surveillance shows peak activity in January and February. Florida has a slightly earlier season skew — we tend to see flu activity ramp earlier in the fall and persist into late spring. Tourist exposure and year-round air conditioning also keep transmission steady.
Practical implication: getting your flu shot by the end of October maximizes coverage through the full Florida transmission season.
Who Should Get It
CDC recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone aged 6 months and older with rare exceptions. The patient groups that benefit most:
- Adults aged 65 and older — consider the high-dose or adjuvanted formulation
- Pregnant women in any trimester
- Children 6 months to 5 years
- Adults with chronic conditions: asthma, COPD, diabetes, kidney disease, immunosuppression, cardiovascular disease
- Healthcare workers and household contacts of high-risk patients
- Travelers heading to the northern hemisphere fall and winter
The 2026-27 Formulation
The 2026-27 vaccine targets the four strains anticipated to circulate based on WHO global surveillance. The specific A/H1N1, A/H3N2, B/Victoria, and B/Yamagata-lineage strains are matched to current circulation patterns.
High-dose options available for adults 65+:
- Fluzone High-Dose Quadrivalent — four times standard antigen dose
- Fluad Quadrivalent — adjuvanted formulation
- Flublok Quadrivalent — recombinant, higher antigen dose, egg-free
We carry the standard, high-dose, and egg-free options.
Side Effects And What To Expect
Most patients have only minor sore arm and mild fatigue for 24 to 48 hours. Some patients run a low-grade fever the day after vaccination — this is an expected immune response, not flu. The vaccine does not cause flu.
Scheduling
Flu shots are a 5-minute visit at our Surfside clinic. Walk-in throughout September and October. Insurance coverage is standard with no copay for most plans. Self-pay rate is $30 standard / $65 high-dose.
We also run drive-through flu shot days at the clinic during peak vaccination season — watch our social media and the homepage banner in late September for dates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get the flu shot and COVID booster at the same visit?
Yes — co-administration is recommended by the CDC. We give them in opposite arms.
Is the flu shot covered by insurance?
Yes, by virtually all Florida insurance plans with no copay as preventive care.
I had the flu last March. Do I still need this year’s shot?
Yes. Antibodies from previous infection wane and the new strains differ. Annual vaccination is recommended for sustained protection.
I’m allergic to eggs. Can I get the flu shot?
Yes. We carry the egg-free recombinant formulation (Flublok).
