RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is widely known as a childhood illness, but it infects adults too — and for older adults or those with chronic conditions, it can be surprisingly dangerous. Here is what you need to know about RSV in adults.
RSV infects approximately 64 million adults worldwide each year. In healthy adults, it typically causes cold-like symptoms that resolve on their own. But in adults over 65, those with heart or lung disease, or immunocompromised individuals, RSV can lead to pneumonia, hospitalization, and serious complications.
In healthy adults, RSV looks a lot like a common cold — runny nose, cough, mild fever, sore throat, and fatigue. The illness typically lasts 1-2 weeks. The key difference is that RSV tends to produce a deeper, more persistent cough than a typical cold, and fatigue can linger for weeks.
Seek medical attention if you develop difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, wheezing that is new or worsening, a fever above 103°F, symptoms that initially improved then suddenly got worse, a bluish color to the lips or fingertips, or if you are over 65 or have a chronic heart or lung condition with any respiratory symptoms.
At TrufaMED Urgent Care, we offer rapid RSV testing alongside COVID, flu, and strep tests. Results are available in minutes, allowing your provider to make an accurate diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment during your visit.
There is no antiviral medication specifically for RSV in adults. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms — fever reducers, hydration, rest, and monitoring for complications. For patients with dehydration from fever and reduced fluid intake, we offer IV hydration to restore fluid balance quickly.
You cannot reliably distinguish RSV from flu or COVID based on symptoms alone — they overlap significantly. That is why testing matters. At TrufaMED, we can test for all three during a single visit and provide targeted treatment recommendations based on your specific diagnosis.
The FDA has approved RSV vaccines for adults 60 and older. Talk to your primary care provider about whether the RSV vaccine is right for you. For everyone, standard precautions apply — frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and staying home when you have symptoms.
