Ear Infections in Adults: Why They Are More Common in Miami and How to Treat Them Fast

TrufaMED Urgent Care front desk in Surfside Florida serving Miami Beach, Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor Islands, and Sunny Isles Beach

Ear infections are not just for kids. Adults in South Florida are especially susceptible thanks to swimming, humidity, and frequent water exposure. If you are dealing with ear pain, muffled hearing, or drainage, here is what you need to know.

Why Miami Residents Get More Ear Infections

Swimmer’s ear (otitis externa) is extremely common in South Florida. Ocean swimming, pool use, and even sweating in the humidity trap moisture in the ear canal, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Middle ear infections (otitis media) often follow colds and sinus infections, which are also common in our area due to year-round allergens.

Swimmer’s Ear vs. Middle Ear Infection

Swimmer’s ear affects the outer ear canal and is characterized by pain that worsens when you pull on your earlobe, itching inside the ear, and sometimes drainage. Middle ear infections cause deeper pain, muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness, and sometimes fever. Both require different treatments, which is why a proper diagnosis matters.

Home Remedies That Work (and Ones That Do Not)

Over-the-counter pain relievers can manage discomfort temporarily. A warm compress against the ear provides some relief. However, do not put anything inside your ear — no cotton swabs, no hydrogen peroxide, no essential oils. These can worsen the infection or damage the ear canal.

When to Visit Urgent Care

Come to TrufaMED if ear pain is moderate to severe and not improving with OTC pain medication, you have drainage from the ear, your hearing is noticeably affected, you have fever alongside ear pain, or symptoms have lasted more than 2-3 days.

What We Do at Your Visit

Your provider examines your ear with an otoscope to visualize the ear canal and eardrum, determining whether the infection is outer, middle, or both. Treatment typically includes prescription antibiotic ear drops for swimmer’s ear or oral antibiotics for middle ear infections, plus pain management recommendations. Most patients feel significant improvement within 24-48 hours of starting treatment.

Preventing Future Ear Infections

Dry your ears thoroughly after swimming or showering. Consider using swimmer’s ear prevention drops after ocean or pool exposure. Do not use cotton swabs to clean inside your ears. Treat sinus infections and allergies promptly to prevent them from spreading to your ears.
