That sudden, searing pain in the back of your throat — the kind that makes swallowing feel like sandpaper — is a familiar warning sign. If the sore throat came on quickly, is accompanied by fever and swollen lymph nodes, and there is no cough or runny nose, strep throat is a strong possibility. And the sooner you get tested and treated, the sooner you will feel better.
At TrufaMED Urgent Care in Surfside, FL, we perform rapid strep tests daily and can have you diagnosed, prescribed, and on your way in under an hour.
What Is Strep Throat?
Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by Group A Streptococcus. Unlike a viral sore throat — which often accompanies a cold — strep requires antibiotic treatment. Without antibiotics, strep can last longer, spread to others more easily, and in rare cases lead to serious complications including rheumatic fever, kidney inflammation, and peritonsillar abscess.
Strep throat is most common in children aged 5 to 15, but adults get it too — especially those who are around school-age children or work in close-contact environments. It spreads through respiratory droplets, making it highly contagious in households, classrooms, and offices.
Strep vs. Viral Sore Throat: How to Tell
Not every sore throat is strep. In fact, most sore throats are caused by viruses and resolve on their own. However, certain features point toward a bacterial cause. Strep throat typically presents with a sudden onset of severe throat pain, pain when swallowing, fever of 101°F or higher, swollen and tender lymph nodes in the front of the neck, red and swollen tonsils (sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus), and tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth.
Notably, strep throat usually does not come with cough, runny nose, hoarseness, or conjunctivitis. If you have a sore throat with significant nasal congestion and cough, a virus is the more likely culprit. The only definitive way to confirm strep is through a rapid antigen test or throat culture — both available at TrufaMED.
Rapid Strep Testing at TrufaMED
When you visit our Surfside urgent care clinic with a sore throat, your provider will examine your throat, check for swollen lymph nodes, and perform a rapid strep test. The test involves a quick throat swab — slightly uncomfortable but over in seconds — with results available in approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
If the rapid test is positive, your provider will prescribe antibiotics immediately, most commonly penicillin or amoxicillin. If the rapid test is negative but your symptoms strongly suggest strep, a backup throat culture may be sent to the lab for confirmation, as rapid tests can occasionally miss the infection.
Why Prompt Treatment Matters
Starting antibiotics within 48 hours of symptom onset provides the greatest benefit. Antibiotics help you feel better faster, typically reducing fever and throat pain within 24 to 48 hours. They also shorten the contagious period — you are generally no longer contagious after 24 hours on antibiotics — which is important for returning to work or school and protecting family members.
Perhaps more importantly, antibiotic treatment reduces the risk of complications. While rare in developed countries, untreated strep can trigger rheumatic fever (which can damage heart valves), post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (kidney inflammation), and abscess formation around the tonsils. For children especially, prompt treatment is the standard of care.
Strep Throat in Children
Children are the most commonly affected age group for strep throat, and parents often bring their kids to TrufaMED when the school nurse sends them home with a sore throat and fever. Our pediatric urgent care team is experienced in making young patients comfortable during the exam and throat swab.
If your child tests positive for strep, it is important to complete the full course of antibiotics even if they start feeling better after a day or two. Stopping early can allow the bacteria to survive and potentially cause a recurrence or complications.
Sore Throat Plus Other Symptoms? We Can Help
Sometimes a sore throat is just one piece of a larger picture. If your throat pain is accompanied by difficulty breathing, inability to swallow liquids, a muffled or “hot potato” voice, drooling, or severe neck swelling, seek immediate care — these can be signs of a peritonsillar abscess or epiglottitis, both of which require urgent medical attention.
At TrufaMED, we have the diagnostic tools to evaluate beyond a simple sore throat. Our on-site digital X-ray imaging can assess for airway concerns, and our providers can administer IV fluids or medications if needed for patients who cannot swallow comfortably.

Strep Throat in Miami: What You Should Know
Group A Streptococcus bacteria circulate year-round in South Florida, though infections peak during late fall through early spring when people spend more time in close indoor contact. Strep throat requires antibiotic treatment not only to resolve symptoms faster but to prevent serious complications including rheumatic fever, which can cause permanent heart valve damage, and peritonsillar abscess. Our rapid strep test provides results within minutes, and if positive, we prescribe appropriate antibiotic therapy during the same visit.
For patients with recurrent strep infections (seven or more episodes in one year, or five per year over two consecutive years), we discuss the option of referral to an ENT specialist for evaluation and possible tonsillectomy. We also screen close contacts when appropriate and provide return-to-school guidance for pediatric patients. TrufaMED's walk-in strep testing is available every day at our Surfside clinic with no appointment needed.
