The Fall Flu Shot in Miami Beach: 2026 Edition

By mid-September the 2026-27 flu vaccine is widely stocked at pharmacies, primary care clinics, and our urgent care. The question is not whether to get it (the case is well-established for nearly everyone aged 6 months and older) but where, when, and which formulation. This is the Miami Beach guide.

Timing For Miami Residents

Get the flu shot by the end of October. The vaccine takes about two weeks to provide full protection, and Florida flu season can start ramping in November. October vaccination puts you ahead of the typical season.

Adults 65+ may benefit from waiting until late September or early October so peak antibody response aligns with peak transmission. Younger adults can vaccinate any time from mid-September onward.

Which Formulation

  • Standard quadrivalent: most adults and children, includes four strains. We carry the standard formulation for all ages.
  • High-dose quadrivalent (Fluzone High-Dose): recommended for adults 65+. Four times the antigen of standard.
  • Adjuvanted (Fluad): also for adults 65+. Adjuvant boosts immune response.
  • Recombinant (Flublok): egg-free option for patients with severe egg allergy or preference for an egg-free vaccine.
  • Nasal spray (FluMist): live attenuated, available for healthy non-pregnant patients ages 2 to 49. Some patients prefer this for needle phobia.

Where To Get It

  • Our Surfside clinic: walk-in or scheduled, 5-minute visit, all formulations stocked
  • Local pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens, Publix): convenient but limited counseling time
  • Your primary care physician: consolidated with other visits if you have one scheduled
  • Concierge members: we can administer at home as part of a scheduled visit

Cost

Nearly all Florida insurance plans cover seasonal flu vaccination at no copay as preventive care. This includes Medicare for adults 65+ (who should get the high-dose or adjuvanted formulation).

Self-pay rates at our clinic: standard quadrivalent $30, high-dose or adjuvanted $65, recombinant Flublok $65.

What To Expect After

Sore arm at the injection site for 24 to 48 hours is universal. Some patients have mild fatigue or low-grade fever the next day; this is an immune response, not flu. Avoid heavy exercise on the arm that was vaccinated for the first 24 hours.

Serious side effects are rare. Anaphylaxis has been documented; if you have severe allergies discuss with the administering team. Guillain-Barre syndrome is extremely rare with current vaccines.

Combining With Other Vaccinations

Co-administration is recommended:

  • Updated COVID booster: safe to give same visit, opposite arm
  • Tdap if due: safe to combine
  • Pneumococcal vaccines: safe to combine for adults 65+
  • Shingles vaccine: safe to combine
  • RSV vaccine (for eligible adults): safe to combine

We routinely catch up multiple vaccines in single visits for adults who have been behind on preventive care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get the flu shot if I have a mild cold?

Yes, a mild cold is not a contraindication. Significant fever or moderate-to-severe illness is a reason to defer.

What if I’m pregnant?

Annual flu vaccination is strongly recommended in any trimester of pregnancy. Pregnant women have higher flu complication rates.

Can I get FluMist instead of the shot?

If you are healthy, ages 2-49, and not pregnant, yes. We carry FluMist.

Will the flu shot give me the flu?

No. The vaccine is either inactivated (cannot replicate) or live attenuated (FluMist) but cannot cause flu illness. Symptoms after vaccination are immune response, not infection.
