Do I Need Stitches? A Quick Guide to Knowing When a Cut Requires Medical Attention

TrufaMED Urgent Care Surfside FL – Medical Team

Kitchen knives, broken glass, a fall on the sidewalk — cuts happen fast. And the immediate question is always the same: does this need stitches? Knowing the answer can save you a costly ER trip or prevent a scar that could have been avoided.

You Likely Need Stitches If:

The cut is deeper than a quarter inch. You can see fat, muscle, or bone. The wound edges gape open and do not stay together on their own. Bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes of firm, direct pressure. The cut is on your face, hands, or over a joint. The wound was caused by a dirty, rusty, or contaminated object. There is glass or debris embedded in the wound.

You Can Probably Treat It at Home If:

The cut is shallow and the edges close together naturally. Bleeding stops within 10 minutes of applying pressure. The wound is small (under half an inch) and not on the face. There is no debris in the wound and it happened with a clean object.

Time Matters

For the best results, lacerations should be closed within 6-8 hours of the injury. Facial wounds have a longer window — up to 24 hours — because of the strong blood supply to the face. The longer you wait, the higher the risk of infection and the worse the cosmetic outcome.

What Happens at an Urgent Care Laceration Visit

At TrufaMED Urgent Care, our providers clean the wound thoroughly, numb the area with local anesthesia, check for tendon, nerve, or vessel damage, and close the wound using the best technique for the location — sutures, wound adhesive (skin glue), or closure strips. We also assess your tetanus status and administer a booster if needed.

For kids, we often use wound adhesive which is painless and produces excellent cosmetic results — no needles required.

Skip the ER, Save Time and Money

Most lacerations do not require an ER visit. Urgent care provides the same quality wound repair in about an hour, at a fraction of the cost. We schedule your suture removal visit before you leave and provide wound care instructions to minimize scarring.
