The quick answer

What is amino acid IV therapy?

Amino acid IV therapy delivers individual amino acids, the molecular building blocks of proteins, directly into the bloodstream. Because the drip bypasses the digestive tract, those amino acids reach circulation at close to 100% bioavailability, ready to feed protein synthesis, muscle repair, energy metabolism, and tissue healing. At TrufaMED in Surfside, every formula is designed by a board-certified physician and placed by a registered nurse, in our Joint Commission-accredited clinic or by mobile visit to your home or hotel. Sessions run 30 to 60 minutes.

Why intravenous

Why IV amino acids outperform oral protein

A protein shake has to survive digestion, where enzymatic breakdown and first-pass metabolism strip out much of what you swallow. An amino acid IV skips all of that and delivers free-form amino acids your cells can use immediately.

When you eat protein, it is broken into peptides and amino acids in the gut, absorbed unevenly, and routed through the liver before any of it reaches your muscles. Several key amino acids, arginine among them, are heavily catabolized on that first pass, which is why oral doses produce inconsistent results. An IV places free-form amino acids directly into the bloodstream at full strength, so plasma concentrations reach levels oral supplementation cannot match.

That matters most when demand is high and time is short: the recovery window after hard training, the healing phase after surgery, or a stretch of fatigue when the body is burning through its reserves. Free amino acids work faster and with more precision than protein hydrolysates, which is why a recovery drip is measured in minutes rather than days.

The building blocks

The amino acids in our physician formulas

Each amino acid does a specific job. Our physicians select and combine them based on your goals, from muscle repair to vascular support to tissue healing.

L-Carnitine

Energy and fat metabolism

The primary transporter of long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Without enough carnitine, fat cannot enter the mitochondria for oxidation. IV delivery saturates skeletal-muscle carnitine stores rapidly, a target oral carnitine reaches only partially. Featured in our Superstar and Post Workout drips.

Glutamine

Gut health and muscle recovery

The most abundant free amino acid in plasma and the primary fuel for rapidly dividing cells, including the intestinal lining and immune cells. Under physiological stress, plasma glutamine can drop by half. IV glutamine restores those stores faster than any oral route, valuable in post-surgical and post-illness recovery.

Arginine

Blood flow and vascular function

The direct precursor to nitric oxide, the vasodilator that relaxes vessel walls and increases blood flow to working tissue. This is why athletes value it for muscle pump and oxygen delivery. IV arginine bypasses the intestinal first-pass effect that limits oral bioavailability, producing more reliable activation.

Taurine

Cardiovascular and cellular hydration

Among the most abundant intracellular amino acids in the heart, skeletal muscle, and nervous system. Taurine modulates calcium handling (critical for cardiac contractility), regulates cell volume as an osmolyte, and acts as a mitochondrial antioxidant. A cornerstone of the Superstar blend.

BCAAs

Muscle repair signaling

Leucine, isoleucine, and valine, the three branched-chain amino acids most directly implicated in post-exercise muscle repair and anabolic signaling. Delivered intravenously after training, they saturate muscle tissue during the recovery window. The lead ingredients in the Post Workout Recovery IV.

Glycine and others

Tissue healing and rest

Glycine supports collagen synthesis and tissue repair, lysine and methionine contribute to protein structure and wound healing, and tryptophan feeds serotonin and downstream pathways. Your physician selects from these based on your goals during a custom amino consultation.

Who it is for

Who benefits from amino IV therapy?

Amino acid IV therapy suits a wide range of patients, from competitive athletes to people managing fatigue, recovery, or surgical healing.

Athletes and hard trainers

High training volume depletes BCAAs and glutamine faster than diet can replace them. An amino drip after a session saturates muscle tissue during the recovery window, reducing soreness and shortening the return to performance.

Post-surgical recovery

Healing tissue demands amino acids for protein synthesis and collagen formation. A physician-designed blend supports recovery alongside, never instead of, your surgeon’s plan, directed here by a board-certified general surgeon.

Fatigue and low energy

Several amino acids feed the mitochondrial pathways that produce cellular energy, and L-carnitine depletion is linked to fatigue in many clinical contexts. We recommend a clinical evaluation first to identify the underlying cause.

Recovery-focused executives

Frequent travel, poor sleep, and sustained stress drain the body’s amino reserves. A targeted infusion supports energy metabolism and recovery between demanding stretches, in-clinic or delivered to your home or hotel.

Gut and immune support

Glutamine is the primary fuel for the intestinal lining and immune cells, and plasma stores fall sharply under physiological stress. IV glutamine restores them faster than any oral route during illness or recovery.

Longevity and wellness

Some amino acids, including tryptophan and methionine, are precursors that support cellular energy pathways. Many patients schedule amino IVs alongside NAD+ therapy as part of a longevity protocol.

Your session

From intake to discharge, in four steps

Intake and health screen

A nurse reviews your history and goals, and a physician screens for contraindications, including kidney disease and amino transport disorders, before approving your drip.

IV placement

A registered nurse places a small-gauge catheter using hospital-grade sterile technique and confirms flow. No medical assistants, no trainees.

Infusion, 30 to 60 minutes

You recline while the drip runs. In-clinic sessions include complimentary red light therapy at no extra charge. Work, read, or rest.

Post-infusion and discharge

The line comes out, vitals are checked, and you leave. Most patients feel the effects within the hour, and athletes often notice less soreness the next day.

Meet the clinical team

Amino acid IV therapy, answered

What patients across Miami ask most before booking an amino drip.

What is amino acid IV therapy and how does it work?

Amino acid IV therapy delivers individual amino acids, the molecular building blocks of proteins, directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous drip. Because the infusion bypasses the digestive tract entirely, amino acids reach circulation at close to 100% bioavailability, plasma concentrations oral supplements cannot match. They are then available for immediate use in protein synthesis, neurotransmitter production, energy metabolism, and tissue repair. Sessions run 30 to 60 minutes and are administered by registered nurses under physician oversight.

Is amino IV therapy the same as a protein infusion?

No. Protein infusions used in clinical nutrition deliver intact proteins or long-chain peptides that require enzymatic breakdown. Amino acid IV therapy delivers free-form individual amino acids, already in their bioavailable state, so cells can take them up immediately for metabolic use. Free amino acids work faster and with greater precision than protein hydrolysates.

Which amino acids are in the Superstar IV?

The Superstar IV is our highest-potency amino blend. It features L-carnitine for fat oxidation and energy transport, taurine for cardiovascular support and cellular hydration, arginine as a nitric-oxide precursor for blood flow, and a comprehensive B-vitamin complex to support the enzymatic pathways amino acids feed. It is $450 in-clinic and $500 for mobile delivery, popular with athletes, executives, and patients recovering from intensive physical demands.

How is the Post Workout Recovery IV different from the Superstar?

The Post Workout Recovery IV ($345 in-clinic, $395 mobile) is built for acute exercise recovery. It leads with branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, valine) and L-glutamine, the combination most directly tied to post-exercise muscle repair and anabolic signaling. The Superstar is a broader performance and vitality formula with an amino profile that emphasizes energy pathways and vascular function. Many athletes cycle between the two by training phase.

Does amino IV therapy help with muscle recovery and athletic performance?

For athletes and high-intensity trainers, amino acid IV therapy delivered after training saturates muscle tissue during the anabolic window, when BCAAs and glutamine deplete faster than diet can replenish them. Many patients report reduced delayed-onset soreness and a faster return to training. Pair it with adequate protein intake, sleep, and progressive load for the best results.

Can amino IV therapy support post-surgical and tissue healing?

Amino acids are the raw material for protein synthesis and tissue repair. Glutamine supports the gut lining and immune cells under surgical stress, glycine contributes to collagen synthesis, and arginine supports blood flow to healing tissue. For patients in a documented recovery context, our physicians can design a custom amino blend during an intake assessment. This is supportive care, not a replacement for your surgeon’s plan.

Are there side effects, and who should not get it?

At therapeutic doses administered by trained clinical staff, amino acid IV therapy is well-tolerated. Minor effects can include warmth or flushing at the site, a brief taste sensation, or mild lightheadedness if the rate is fast. It is not appropriate for people with severe kidney disease, certain metabolic disorders such as maple syrup urine disease, or amino acid transport defects. Your intake assessment screens for these before any infusion.

How long does a session take and how often can I get one?

Most amino sessions run 30 to 60 minutes. The Post Workout and Rehydrate+ drips infuse in about 30 to 45 minutes; the Superstar and custom blends may take 45 to 60. For healthy adults, weekly to biweekly sessions are common during intense training or recovery, and monthly for maintenance. Our physicians do not recommend daily infusions without a specific clinical reason.

Can I get amino IV therapy at home or my hotel in Miami?

Yes. Our mobile IV service covers South Florida, including Miami Beach, Surfside, Bal Harbour, Sunny Isles Beach, Aventura, Brickell, and beyond. Mobile amino sessions are available for every drip on the menu at $50 over in-clinic rates: Superstar $500, Post Workout Recovery $395, Rehydrate+ $275. Book mobile IV at trufamed.janeapp.com or contact our team.

Is amino acid IV therapy covered by insurance?

IV therapy for wellness and performance is a self-pay service and is generally not covered by standard health insurance. We accept all major credit cards, FSA, and HSA cards. In rare cases where amino IV therapy is part of a documented clinical treatment plan, coverage may vary, so contact your insurer directly. We can provide itemized documentation on request.

What makes TrufaMED amino IVs different from a spa or mobile IV company?

Every TrufaMED formula is designed and reviewed by board-certified physicians, a general surgeon and an emergency physician with hospital-grade IV experience. We are Joint Commission accredited, the only urgent care in Florida with that distinction, and one of just eight nationwide. Our nurses are trained in IV administration, and our ingredients are medical-grade through pharmaceutical supply chains. You are receiving a clinical procedure, not a wellness amenity.
